Romney back peddles on abortion

Former Mass. Governor Mitt Romney is already softening his luke-warm position on the sanctity of life.

Last week Romney in an interview with a local ABC-TV affiliate said he believes that state should have the right to legalize abortion.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Tuesday in a Nevada television interview that he supports letting states "make their own decision" about whether to keep abortion legal.

"My view is that the Supreme Court has made an error in saying at the national level one size fits all for the whole nation," Romney told Nevada political columnist Jon Ralston in a televised interview. "Instead, I would let states make their choices."

Asked by Ralston if it was "OK" with him that Nevada is a "pro-choice state," Romney said, "I'd let states make their own decision in this regard. My view, of course, is I'm a pro-life individual. That's the position I support. But, I'd let states have this choice rather than let the federal government have it." [Emphasis added]

Romney hasn't even won the nomination yet, and is already trying to appeal to moderates. Statements like this, void his supposed pro-life conversion.

Either you are opposed to the murder of innocent children or you are not, there is no middle ground.

Romeny's Unfavorables surpass Hillary

Rasmussen Reports released a poll that has Mitt Romney's unfavorable ratings higher than Hillary Clinton's.

The salient details:

The Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 44% of Likely Voters would definitely vote against Romney if he’s on the ballot in 2008. That’s a point higher than the 43% who would definitely vote against Clinton.

In terms of partisan reaction, it’s interesting to note that 25% of Republicans say they would definitely vote against Romney while 22% of Democrats would vote against Edwards.

Among unaffiliated voters, 44% say they will definitely vote against Clinton and 41% say the same about Romney.

Clinton does a better job of uniting Republicans than any other candidate. Seventy-six percent (76%) of the GOP faithful say they’ll definitely vote against the former First Lady. Only 61% of Republicans say the same about Obama and Edwards.

Sixty-three percent (63%) of Democrats say they’ll definitely vote against Romney.

Romney speaks out of both sides of his mouth

Boston Herald's Ross reports Mitt Romney owns stock in 2 companies involved in embryonic stem cell research, biomedical firms Novo Nordisk and Millipore corp, "both of which use human embryos to research cures for chronic diseases." In his "public actions," Romney has "occupied a middle ground on stem cell research," supporting "using excess embryos created at fertility clinics, but he has opposed cloning or creating new embryos solely for experimentation."

Romney's "assets are held in a blind trust created after he was elected" Gov in '02. The manager of his trust, Brad Malt of the firm Ropes & Gray, "said Romney had no way of knowing how his funds were invested." While many candidates sell stocks held in blind trust, Romney didn't do so before WH '08. "Candidates can also set restrictions on their investments when a blind trust is created, but Malt said Romney did not take that step in 2002."

Romney's financial statement shows he owns between $100K and $250K in Novo Nordisk, "a Denmark-based company engaged in research projects involving embryonic stem cells" (8/15).

Romney has claimed that his election year conversion to the pro-life cause is a result of studying embryonic stem cells, and how his opposition to embryonic stems cell research was the catalyst for his pro-life conversion.

Romney opposes embryonic stem cell research, but has no problem making money off the destruction of human life.

Romney Wrong on Guns, AGAIN

“Wrong Again Romney” proves he doesn’t like guns or know anything about them

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney continues to display his contempt for gun owners. In yesterday’s Foster’s Daily Democrat, Romney made convulated statements about the Second Amendment, but reinforced his earlier positions that citizens can't be trusted with many types of firearms. To make matters worse, Romney clearly has no understanding of firearms or the basic firearms laws of this country.

"No one is suggesting that automatic weapons be made available to the public. No one is suggesting that automatic weapons be made legal," Romney said at a town hall meeting in a school gym. "I support the Second Amendment. I support the ban on (automatic weapons). They're not connected with a fundraising event where they're using weapons not available to the public."

Wrong again, Gov. Romney. Automatic weapons are legally owned by hundreds of thousands of citizens across the country, who have undergone extensive background checks from local and national law enforcement and are heavily -- and unconstitutionally -- regulated in their use, travel and possession. The 1934 National Fire Arms Act allows anyone who purchases a $200 federal tax stamp after passing a background check to possess a fully automatic weapon (often called NFA weapons ), which are all registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Currently, there are 366,000 of these firearms legally owned by Americans (Small Arms Review, Feb. 2007).

There is no documentation that a legally owned and registered NFA weapon has been used in the commission of a violent crime.

NFA weapons (legal machineguns) are different from the so-called "assault weapons" Gov. Romney banned in Massachussets in 2004, a fact lost on Romney as he stumbled through a legal briar patch in yesterday's comments.

"I've held the stick on an F-16 fighter jet. That doesn't mean I think the public ought to be flying F-16 fighter jets," Romney said.

Wrong again, Gov. Romney. The Constitution is clear: our right to keep and bear small arms “shall not be infringed”. That document explicitly protects citizen's rights to own firearms, with no "sporting use" requirement stated.

Romney apparently believes that the Second Amendment protection only applies to duck hunters.

Romney has a long history of supporting gun control. He signed the permanent Massachusetts assault weapons ban and was a vocal proponent of the Brady Gun Registration Act, the Feinstein Assault weapons ban, and many other infringements upon our Constitutional right to keep and bear arms.

Romney claims to support the Second Amendment, but in the same breath calls for more gun control. You can’t have it multiple ways.

Allard endorses Romney, conservatives weep

According to The Hill, Senator Wayne Allard (R-CO) has announced his endorsement of former Taxacusettes Governor Mitt Romney's campaign for President.

Until very recently, Romney has been a proponent of gun control, state funded abortion, gay-rights, and higher taxes. His ill-fated campaign for MA Senate in 1994 and his run for Governor were liberal love-fests. Romney has a history of saying what is politically expedient in order to get elected. Conservatives should not trust his recent so-called conversion to conservative politics.

It is a shame that Colorado's Senior Republican Senator would hitch himself to Romney's wagon.

Beauprez Endorses Romey

I just got an email from former Congressman Bob Beauprez and his wife Claudia announcing their endorsement of former Mass. Governor Mitt Romney for President.

From the email:

Mitt Romney believes strongly in the core principles of free enterprise, fair and free trade, accountability in education, personal responsibility, tolerance, strong families, and a national defense second to none. More than that, however, we are amazed at what he accomplished during his term as Governor of Massachusetts - strengthening education, laying the foundation for private, market-based health insurance for all, and cutting the size and cost of government.

Specifically, without raising taxes or increasing debt, Governor Romney closed a $3 billion deficit in his first year in office. Each year, Governor Romney filed a balanced budget without raising taxes. By eliminating waste, streamlining the government, and enacting comprehensive economic reforms to stimulate growth in Massachusetts, he got the economy moving again and transformed deficits into surpluses.
